Those of us who have lived here in Naples, Florida have always enjoyed our good clean air, warm temperature, and cool breezes. Since we have no other industry other than tourism our air quality is rated among the best in America. Known as a quiet healthy environment for young families and retirees, and practically everyone in between, Naples and nearby Marco Island has just been named by AARP Magazine as the second best area for life expectancy. With a life expectancy of 80.97 years Naples and Marco are listed just behind Ames, Iowa as the next best place to live the longest.

Why is Naples/Marco rated so high? I think we can attribute many factors to this. With our fantastic winter weather, seniors are much more inclined to enjoy outdoor activities, whether its golfing, tennis or just walking they can do it all year round. Even in the hotter summer months, the local mall Coastland Center opens its doors early for the walkers. The summer evenings are spectacular for cool, breezy walks on the beautiful white sand beaches. With the sand packed down, it makes for easy walking unlike the east coast of Florida, where the darker sand is soft and not as easy to walk on.
Also, as we look at the top 8 areas listed by AARP, it is noticeable that each share something in common. There are no big cities. Less stress living in smaller towns seems to be a factor in longevity. Among this list as well, we don’t find industrial towns, where air pollutants are causing health concerns in the industrial areas.
So are we surprised that Naples/Marco is rated so high, no not really. After all, the reasons mentioned above are why we moved down here in the first place.
